Minimalism in fashion focuses on the bare essentials and any overt ornamentation is removed. Not to be confused with simplicity, minimalism is about the use of lesser things to meet a larger end.
Just like oversized sunglasses with thick frames and embellishments became quite popular last year (as seen on the runways of Valentino and Gucci Spring/Summer 17), this year it is a move towards minimalist fashion trend with the skinniest looking sunnies and of course, less ornamentation.
Skinnier, Narrower & Futuristic
Remember Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne donning those skinny and narrow shades in The Matrix? The futuristic appeal of those goggles when the actors clad themselves with long leather coats and combat boots has indeed been far-reaching.
The tiny angular sunglasses were a hit at the Miu Miu Spring/Summer ’18, Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer ’18 runway shows during Paris Fashion Week and Alexander Wang’s Fall/Winter ’18 runway show in New York. Even though this style was met with criticism initially, it is certainly not the case now.
Following the 20-Year Rule of the fashion-industry recycling the most memorable trends, this year has been all about stark silhouettes that are tiny and barely-there. Harkening back to the 90s, we can see Bella Hadid, Rihanna and Kendall Jenner among a long list of celebrities and fashionistas sporting the Matrix-inspired sunglasses. From tiny oval shades sported by Bella Hadid to the skinny rectangular silhouettes donned by Kendall Jennar, it seems that this eyewear trend won’t be looking back.
So how do you pull them off?
Well, just about any casual clothing style in the monochromatic tone would do. Apart from the shades, let not the other accessories do the talking.
Thin Sunglasses Frames
At the Miu Miu Spring/Summer ’18 runway, the highly urbane, minimal and elegant round sunglasses with thin metal frames and additional flattop bars were the show stealer.
The thin frames of sunglasses in metal look highly fashionable and you can experiment with so many pastel lens tints in yellow, blue and pink irrespective of the frame shape. This is another low-key style of the 90s that has been brought back this year.
Getting that ‘90s laidback look
With the anti-fashion aesthetic being a major part of the grunge music scene, wearing flannels today with denims along with those round or oval shades are enough to give you a new ’90s casual look.
With the minimalist eyewear trend that picked up from the Spring/Summer ’18 runways, it is likely that this trend would be here for the next season as well. From the thin metal sunglasses frames to the futuristic and ultra-skinny shades, this year sees a massive revival of the ’90s. The unique blending of the new and old of the round sunglasses with thin metal frames and the pastel lens tints breathes a fresh air of contemporariness.
